Let’s end LA’s legacy of racism in honor of MLK Day

Dear friend,

As we honor the legacy of Dr. King, we reflect on the present day movement to disrupt decades of inequity and rebuild our institutions towards racial and economic justice.

As Dr. King reminded an audience of allies in 1967 at a speech in Atlanta, land ownership and land use has been used to assert white economic dominance over Black and Indigenous people since this country’s history began.

Just fifty years ago, neighborhoods like Culver City advertised themselves as whites-only suburbs intentionally designed to keep racial integration. Even as the United States moved towards equal rights under the law, white people in power went through great lengths to maintain racial segregation, implementing policies and practices that effectively shut Black Americans out of the housing market and withheld opportunities for generational wealth building through homeownership.

Los Angeles County’s legacy of racial discrimination and segregation in housing still shape our housing landscape today. The time to end this legacy is now.

If 2020 was the year of acknowledgment of our legacies of racism, 2021 is a year of commitment to make structural change. We owe ourselves and future generations a promise that Dr. King’s work was not in vain.

In 2021 Abundant Housing LA is directly naming and fighting the exclusionary housing policies that have hoarded resources for the few at the expense of our wider communities. We are asking for your support to win the fight against segregationist housing policy by making a donation today.

Our goal is to raise $3,000 by the end of the week. Can you chip in $30 to help build an equitable Los Angeles?

Thank you.
