Thanks to our members and our amazing volunteers, we succeeded in advocating for a higher Regional Housing Needs Assessment number of over 1.3 million homes!
The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) originally voted to make their housing number just 430,000 for the next decade. Such a low number would have deepened this severe housing crisis. But AHLA advocated for dramatically increasing that number millions of units through public testimony and letter-writing to both SCAG and the Governor.
The Governor listened and HCD adopted the approach we supported, by adding the number of rent-burdened households and the number of overcrowded households. Now, the Regional Housing number is over 1.3 million.
But there are still more battles to win before the 1.3 million turns into housing. SCAG may try to lower the housing number again. On top of that, SCAG is considering pushing most of the housing into areas with little demand, such as Palm Desert and Coachella, instead of job-rich areas, such as Beverly Hills, Culver City, and Santa Monica. In some of SCAG's proposals, Coachella would get 22 times the amount of housing as Beverly Hills!
We need to make sure SCAG adopts pro-housing practices through advocacy, but we need your support. Can you donate to help fund continued SCAG pro-housing advocacy? And if you haven't already, please consider becoming a supporting member.
And don't forget to use this form to send a letter yourself to SCAG!
